One of the great strengths of the Engineering Team at Thistle Design is their ability to draw on a wide range of experience in the encoder industry to provide unique solutions to measurement, motion and control problems. This encoder was designed to operate in extreme radiation levels of the type where conventional optoelectronics were unable to be used.
The solution arrived at utilised metal etchings rather than glass components and provided an analogue backup signal via a wirewound potentiometer to act as a cross reference against the digital signal generated by a multi-turn incremental encoder. In this way the unit was able to successfully perform in hazardous areas of 100,000,000 Rads.

The 08HI encoder was designed to suit a customers application where space was at an absolute premium. The resulting encoder at 19mm diam x 23mm axial length was small enough (just!) to be fitted into the available aperture.

This encoder resulted from a customers requirement for a direct feedback sensor on a large rolling element. By fitting the encoder round the element itself all problems relating to backlash, eccentricity etc were eliminated thus increasing accuracy and repeatability.
